Review of VOICES OF THE DEAD by Nicola Upson

THE VOICES OF THE DEAD (Josephine Tey Mystery #12) by Nicola Upson will be released on November 10, 2026, by Crooked Lane Books.

Hoping to save England’s most valuable artwork from the Blitz, the National Gallery transports their most valuable artwork to the slate mines of north Wales. Detective Chief Inspector Archie Penrose is in observing the storage of several paintings when part of the mine’s roof collapses and the body of a woman is found among the debris. The discovery of the woman—who has clearly been dead for several years—tears open the small Welsh community and uncovers old secrets. Writer Josephine Tey is also in Wales to escape the Blitz while her lover documents the transportation of the paintings, and she jumps in to help Archie with his investigation.

In THE VOICES OF THE DEAD, Nicola Upson weaves fact and fiction to create a fascinating read with an unexpected ending. I love learning something new while also enjoying a good story.
