When fifty rescue horses arrive at Ragnar’s estate, Meg and her extended family are some of the first to volunteer to help get the horses settled and looked after. Meg also gets caught up in a disagreement between Abel and George—elderly brothers who are fighting over which of them is the rightful heir to their father’s farm. The Hoof and Hearth horse rescue had been set up at the farm. Abel is more than happy to let Hoof and Hearth stay. George, on the other hand, wants them gone. George and his thugs go so far as to follow the horses to Caerphilly to continue harassing George, the rescuers, and even Ragnar. During the night, Meg and her husband go out to check on the horses and find the body of George’s henchman in the barn. As usual, Meg steps up to help the police investigate the murder.
PROBABLE CAWS was a decent story. It’s not my favorite in the Meg Langslow series—but, let’s face it, with 39 books in the series and more on the way, some books just won’t be as appealing or exciting. This one felt a bit formulaic. It was still a fun book. And I enjoyed all the scenes in Ragnar’s gothic castle. Like Meg, I would definitely enjoy the opportunity to spend some time there.
